A day after, she was adopted by an actor and comedian, Paul Gilbert, and his wife, actress and dancer, Barbara Crane.
Melissa has a brother, Jonathan who Paul and Barbara also adopted. Jonathan was a co-star in Little House on the Prairie.
However, her parents were divorced when she was only 6 years old. Her mother, Barbara married an attorney, Harold Abeles and the couple shared a biological daughter, Sara Rebecca Abeles.
Sadly, her father, Paul Gilbert died on February 13, 1976, when Melissa was 11 years of age. Well, her mother, Barbara and Harold Abeles also ended their marriage with a divorce.

This talented American actress has married multiple times throughout her life. She was first married to an actor, Bo Brinkman in 1988. The couple shared a son, Dakota Brinkman who was born on May 1, 1989. Sadly, after 6 years of marriage, they were separated in 1994.
Similarly, in 1995, she married actor Bruce Boxleitner. Gilbert and Boxleitner were blessed with a son, Michael Boxleitner who was born on October 6, 1995. She also became stepmother to two children of Michael, (Sam and Lee).
However, the couple ended their marriage in 2011. Again a couple of years later, she was engaged to an actor, Timothy Busfield in January 2013.
The couple then tied the knot on April 24, 2013, and began residing in Howell, Michigan till 2018 and then moved to New York City in late 2018. With the marriage, Gilbert became stepmother to three children of Timothy, (Samuel, Daisy, and Wilson).
The couple purchased a cottage in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York and has been living there since.

Melissa Gilbert Cancer and Health Issues
Gilbert during her late 30s, was addicted to prescribed medication and alcohol. Also, during her filming for Little House on the Prairie, she had been working with a broken back for months.
She had to go under surgery to replace a disc as well as fuse a vertebra in her lower spine. Well, the surgery was a complete success and she recovered completely.
Sadly, in January 2015, Gilbert had her breast implants removed for health reasons which might be due to breast cancer. But Gilbert herself has not revealed regarding the implants.
