Sean Taylor was a famous American professional football player who had a short professional career journey but yet enough to create a mark that will never be forgotten in the history of American football.

He used to play for the Washington Redskins as a free safety who got selected as the fifth overall in the 2004 NFL Draft. At an early age, he used to play football in Pinecrest, a suburb of Miami, and eventually developed his skills playing at Miami Killian High School. Later, he moved to Gulliver Preparatory School and played football, track, and basketball.

At his prime moment, he was considered the number 1 prospect in Miami-Dade County by the Miami Herald. Moreover, with his football skills, Sean was also rated the number 1 athlete in the nation by Super Prep.

Sean Taylor Career and Profession

College Career

Since his college days, he has been actively playing football for the Miami Hurricanes football team at the University of Miami. During his freshman season, his team won the national championship in 2001 and he was named Big East Special Teams Player of the Week.

Likewise, in 2003, he became the Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Besides football, he also competed in track & field and was placed 4th position in the 100-meter race. 

Professional Career

Sean in 2004 began his professional football career after getting picked on the fifth place in the 2004 NFL Draft by Washington Redskins. He was the first player to be picked from his team, the University of Miami.

He was signed with $18.5 million including a $13.4 million signing bonus for a six-year deal. Sean made his professional football debut against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a 16-10 victory.

In 2006, Taylor began to play as a free safety player along with Adam Archuleta. This year he finished with a career-high 111 combined tackles, six pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles, and an interception in 16 games.

Likewise, the following year in 2007, he was named the hardest-hitting player in the NFL by Sports Illustrated. 

Sean Taylor Death

Sean Taylor was having a dream career and life until random burglars entered his house on November 18, 2007. After a week on November 26, the burglars entered his house again and shot Sean in his leg.

Due to heavy blood loss, Sean died the following day even though he was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital the same night. However, his fiancée and daughter came to no harm. 

His funeral was held at the Pharmed Arena at Florida International University on December 3, 2007.

Later on November 30, four men were arrested alleged to his murder, Venjah K. Hunte, 20; Eric Rivera, Jr., 17; Jason Scott Mitchell, 19; and Charles Kendrick Lee Wardlow, 18, and were sentenced to the maximum of life in prison.

Sean Taylor Legacy

Sean Taylor although isn’t with us today, but his legacy is and will be alive forever for what he has achieved throughout his life. On November 30, 2008, Taylor was inducted posthumously as the 43rd member into the Washington Redskins Ring of Fame.

Likewise, several professional players like Clarke, Cravens, Landon Collins, and D.J. Swearinger wore the jersey number that Sean Taylor wore during his college career to honor Taylor.

Furthermore, the road leading to FedExField was renamed to Sean Taylor Road in September 2020. The Washington Commanders unveiled a status-like display on November 27, 2022, to honor Sean Taylor at FedEx Field.
